Essay Writing

In question 1, 3 and 4 of the written papers, students are being asked to write an essay of 90 words based on one of the reading comprehensions (c.f. Narrative stories), or an essay based on a more abstract topic.

The following expressions will help you get a more structured essay and help improve your writing skills.

 

I. Introducing the topic

- Cet article se réfère / se rapporte au / à la / aux… This article refers to…

- Ce texte aborde le thème du / de la / des / de l’… This text tackles the theme of…

- évoque le sujet de…mentions the subject of…

- Ce qui nous préoccupe / Ce dont il est question ici c’est… What we’re dealing with here is…

- Cela ne fait aucun doute que / qu’il y a . There is no doubt that… / that there is…

 

II. Starting to analyse the problem

- La première constatation qui s’impose, c’est que… The first comment to make is that…

- En premier lieu, il convient d’examiner… First of all, let’s look at…

- Examinons de plus près… Let’s take a closer look at…

- La première question qui se pose, c’est de savoir … : The first question that arises is…

- D’après ce document / ce graphique / cette image / ce texte / cette déclaration / ces sondages… According to this document / graph / picture / text / statement / to the polls…

 

III. Expressing your opinion

- Je pense / crois / estime que… I think / believe / reckon that…

- Je dois dire que… I must say that…

IV. Criticizing someone / something

- Les gens ne font rien pour résoudre/supprimer… People don’t do anything to solve/get rid of…

- J’ai l’impression / le sentiment que les gens ignorent complètement ce problème. I feel/have the impression that people completely ignore this problem.

- Tout le monde est conscient de l’ampleur du / des problème(s) mais .... Everybody is aware of the extent of the problem(s) but ...

- Tout le monde se fiche de / du / de la / des… Nobody cares about…

- Rien n’est fait pour + infinitif… Nothing is done to…+ infinitive

- Personne ne veut parler de ce problème… Nobody wants to talk about this problem…

 

V. Comparisons

VI. Giving advice / finding a solution

- Il est nécessaire (important / vital / urgent) de se battre contre... It is necessary (important / vital / urgent) to fight against...

- Certaines mesures devraient être adoptées par… Some measures should be taken by…

- Il est temps de s’occuper / de se préoccuper de ce problème. It’s about time we deal with…/ we worry about that problem

- L’opinion / Le gouvernement devrait jouer un plus grand rôle dans… The public / the government should be more concerned with…

- Il faut réagir / intervenir à tout prix en ce qui concerne… One has to react / intervene immediately concerning…

- Il est plus qu’important/ nécessaire de trouver / d’adopter …It is more than important (necessary) to find

- Une solution à ce problème. …a solution to that problem

- Ce serait un grand pas en avant si l’on arrivait à (+ infinitif) It would be a big step forward

VII. Conclusion

- Je pense qu’il y a un peu d’espoir de + infinitif… I think there is a bit of hope to + infinitive…

- Je pense qu’il y a peu de chance de + infinitif… I think there is little hope to + infinitive…

- Les problèmes dont il est question prouvent que… The actual problems prove that…

- Il semble donc que… It seems clear that…

- Bref / en un mot… In a word…

- Devant ce problème / Face à ce problème, je me sens inutile / impuissant(e). I feel powerless / useless in dealing with that problem.

- Avant tout, il faut être optimiste. Most of all, one must remain optimistic.
